Arapahoe High School Shooting: Claire Davis Dies More Than Week After Being Shot By Classmate

AppId is over the quota

LITTLETON, Colo. (AP) — A suburban Denver high school student who was shot in the head by a classmate died Saturday afternoon, hospital officials said in a statement.

Claire Davis, 17, was in critical condition after being shot at point-blank range at Arapahoe High School on Dec. 13. Friends and well-wishers had posted prayers online and raised money to help pay for her medical care.

"It is with heavy hearts that we share that at 4:29 p.m. this afternoon, Claire Davis passed away, with her family at her side," the statement from Littleton Adventist Hospital.

"Despite the best efforts of our physicians and nursing staff, and Claire's fighting spirit, her injuries were too severe and the most advanced medical treatments could not prevent this tragic loss of life. Claire's death is immensely heartbreaking for our entire community, our staff and our families."

Karl Pierson, 18, shot Davis, who just happened to be sitting nearby with a friend as Pierson, armed with a shotgun, ammunition strapped to his body, Molotov cocktails and a machete, entered the school and headed toward the library. Davis appeared to be a random target, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson has said.

Pierson likely intended to track down a librarian who had disciplined him, but Robinson said Pierson's arsenal suggested Pierson intended to hurt many others at the school just 8 miles from Columbine High School.

Pierson set off one of the incendiary devices and fired five shots before killing himself just one minute and 20 seconds after entering the building. He knew a sheriff's deputy assigned to the school was closing in, Robinson said at a news conference.

Senior Chris Davis, who is not related to Claire Davis, said she loved horses, had a lot of friends and always seemed happy. Chris Davis, whose locker is next to Claire's, helped organize a fundraising effort for her family.

Students held vigils for Davis after the shooting. Typical was a story told by classmate Maggie Hurlbut.

"One time I remember I was upset in the hallway, and she came up to me and she just — it was like, 'Hey Maggie, I know we don't know each other well but are you doing OK?' And I told her yeah, and she was like, 'Anything you need, I'm here for you,'" Hurlbut said. "Again, that's who she is, and she just wants to take care of others, and that was really just a good representation of her character and who she was."

Gov. John Hickenlooper visited Davis and her family at the hospital and had asked for prayers.

Sheriff Robinson called Davis "a young woman of principle" and "an innocent young lady."

Pierson's original target was believed to be a librarian who coached the school's speech and debate team. Pierson was a skilled speaker and debater on the team. The librarian, whose name was not released, had disciplined the teen in September for reasons that haven't been disclosed. Robinson said Pierson had made some sort of threat against the librarian in September.

"We are looking into that, to the degree that it was understood, and then what interactions or interventions took place," the sheriff said.

The librarian was able to escape the school unharmed, Robinson said.

Pierson legally purchased his shotgun at a local store a week before the shooting and bought the ammunition the day of the shooting. Anyone 18 and older is allowed to buy a shotgun in Colorado; only those over 21 can legally buy a handgun.

Pierson, whose parents were divorced, lived at least part of the time with his mother in a higher-end neighborhood in suburban Highlands Ranch.

The Arapahoe shooting came a day before the one-year anniversary of the Newtown, Conn., attack in which a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Mark Zmuda, Gay Vice Principal At Washington Catholic School, Forced To Resign After Marrying Partner

AppId is over the quota

Students at a Catholic school in Washington state are rallying in support of their vice principal, who was reportedly dismissed after marrying his same-sex partner.

As local news channel KIRO 7 reports, more than 400 students at Eastside Catholic High School in Sammamish, Wash. took part in an on-campus sit-in on Dec. 19 after Vice Principal Mark Zmuda was fired per direct order of the Archdiocese of Seattle. Facing the possibility of termination, Zmuda chose to resign, according to King 5.

The Seattle Times reports that Zmuda married his husband Dana Jergens in July, seven months after same-sex marriage became legal in Washington state.

A spokesman for Eastside Catholic told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that teachers sign contracts which state they must abide by the doctrine of the Catholic Church, which forbids same-sex marriage.

“He clearly understood, as a condition of his employment, that he would abide by church teachings and one of those teachings is they do not approve of this marriage," Mike Patterson said. "He understood that under the Magisterium and teachings of the church, unless he adheres to that teaching he does not have a choice."

Meanwhile, a petition in support of Zmuda was launched by student Bradley Strode and currently has over 12,000 signatures. The petition reads as follows:

The student body is outraged that an incredible administrator, coach, and human being was fired solely because of his love and marriage for another human being. We are uniting in order to change the Catholic Church’s opposition of gay marriage. It is time to revisit the policy and act as Jesus would have, loving and supporting every person regardless of their marital status. United, we want this policy changed so that the Catholic Church can achieve its mission of acting with unconditional love in every situation.

Check out the full petition here.

Other students took to social media in support of Zmuda:

Meanwhile, KIRO 7 cites a recorded statement from Zmuda, in which he noted, "The fact that you guys are all here for me means the world. I just wanted you to know that I love each and every one of you."

He then added, "Yes, I did get married this past summer and I know it is against the Catholic teaching. ... I hope that no matter what happens to me and to the school, that all of you guys will seek a career and work very hard, find the love of your life, hopefully one day get married as well. At the same time, no matter what happens, strive to do your best."

Daniel Robert Cook, 11, Dead In Idaho Elementary School Bus Crash

AppId is over the quota  A dump truck collided with a school bus Thursday at a rural southwestern Idaho intersection, killing an 11-year-old boy and injuring four other children.

KUNA, Idaho (AP) — A dump truck collided with a school bus Thursday at a rural southwestern Idaho intersection, killing an 11-year-old boy and injuring four other children.

Canyon County Coroner Vicki DeGeus-Morris confirmed the child's identity as Daniel Robert Cook. She says the boy died of blunt force trauma sustained in the crash.

Four children were taken to the hospital with injuries, and the bus driver was taken to a hospital for emotional distress.

Idaho State Police investigators are still trying to determine what happened and who may be at fault. Because it involves a fatality, criminal charges are forthcoming, said Cpl. Timothy Davidson.

"It's not just an infraction, it's going to be a criminal charge, more than likely," he said.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Theresa Baker says all the kids were sixth-graders or younger. The names and conditions of the injured children have not yet been released.

Adam Cobb, whose son was friends with Daniel Cook, was at the crash site Thursday to collect the deceased boy's belongings for the family. Cobb's son wasn't among the kids on the bus.

"It's a terrible loss not only for the family but for the community," Cobb said. "Daniel loved to wrestle and play football. He was just the kind of kid you'd want at your home. We love him — he was just a good boy."

Daniel Cook also lived nearby and would only have been on the bus a few minutes before the crash, Cobb said.

Investigators said Cook's parents arrived at the scene about 30 minutes after the crash and unaware of their son's condition. ISP Sgt. John Burke said the father knew where his son sat on the bus and recognized immediately the significant damage in that section of the bus.

"It's a horrible ... it's a terrible thing," Burke said. "The family (of the deceased child) is devastated. They need our prayers and all we can do is hope they can get through it."

The collision occurred at an intersection on a two-lane country road lined by homes and small farm fields between Nampa and Kuna, a town of 16,000 on the edge of the Snake River Canyon.

Investigators say the dump truck was traveling north on Happy Valley Road, when the driver approached the four-way intersection with no stop sign and speed limit of 50 mph. The bus was traveling east on the intersecting road, which did have a stop sign. Weather and road conditions were not factors and speed before impact appeared to be low, they said.

Burke said it's too early to determine what went wrong.

"We can't really speculate. We need to gather more information and continue the investigation," Burke said.

The rear right section of the bus had visible damage, with broken windows and a torn metal exterior. The front end of the dump truck was lying in a nearby yard.

A routine inspection of the bus found no maintenance issues, but a similar inspection of the commercial truck found multiple equipment violations. Davidson said it's unclear whether those deficiencies played a role in the crash.

Idaho Department of Education Spokeswoman Melissa McGrath said the Kuna School District runs its own bussing operation, meaning it buys the vehicles and hires its own drivers.

The last time a student died in a bus crash in Idaho was in Boise in 1969, she said.

Joe Flacco Criticizes Ravens' Wildcat Offense: 'I Think It Makes You Look Like A High School Offense'

AppId is over the quota

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco hates his team's use of the wildcat formation, and Tuesday he let everyone know just how much.

He wasn't happy with coach John Harbaugh's decision to employ backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor in the wildcat Sunday in an effort to enhance the Ravens' running attack against the New York Jets. Taylor took five snaps — running four times and throwing an incomplete pass — in addition to lining up as a receiver on seven other plays.

"I don't like that stuff," Flacco said Tuesday. "I think it makes you look like a high school offense. That's just my opinion."

Flacco didn't leave it at that.

"I don't care how we use it in the game, I'm just not a huge fan of it," he said. "I'm the quarterback. I want to be behind the line of scrimmage, I want to be taking the snaps. That's really the only thing. I don't necessarily take it personally.

"I just think it makes us look like not an NFL team."

After earning Super Bowl MVP honors in February, Flacco received a $120.6 million, six-year contract. Things have not gone swimmingly for the Baltimore offense this season, and the sixth-year pro would prefer the Ravens (5-6) seek to correct the flaws rather than resort to trickery.

"I'm all for us doing things to get better but we're not going to be good if we just can't get good at the basics of what we do 90 percent of the time," he said. "We have to be good at those things or we're not going to be good no matter what. I just want to make sure that we're focusing on getting good at those things."

When Taylor is in the game, Flacco usually leaves the game. On Sunday, however, he occasionally lined up at wide receiver and barely flinched after the snap.

Asked to define his role in the wildcat, Flacco said, "I'm not doing a single thing. I'm not blocking, I'm not doing anything."
