Capitol Police Officer Raises Voice At Immigration Activists: 'Comprende?'

AppId is over the quota

A Capitol police officer got testy with immigration reform advocates -- including children -- on Thursday when they were singing outside the office of House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to ask him to bring a bill for a vote.

"We're not going to have singing in my building," the officer said, which can be seen in a video posted by KFTStories. "We're not going to have it. Warning number one, okay? That's all you get. This is getting old real fast, okay? I'm not going to tolerate it. This is a place of business, and we do not sing in the hallway."

"Comprende?" he asked, raising his voice.

"We've got it, sir," one of the advocates replied.

There have been a number of protesters outside of Boehner's office in recent weeks, as the House prepares to finish the year without votes on immigration reform. Children are in Washington this week to protest as part of advocacy group Fair Immigration Reform Movement's "Keeping Families Together: Youth in Action" campaign.

Although people are allowed to visit congressional offices, they can be removed or arrested for disruptive behavior. Capitol Police public information officer Kimberly Schneider responded to the incident in a statement:

We are aware of the incident posted online concerning an unlawful demonstration today on U.S. Capitol Grounds.

The Department is reviewing the incident and wants to assure the public that the U.S. Capitol Police welcomes daily all people to visit and lawfully express their First Amendment rights.

Further, it is the mission of the U.S. Capitol Police and the basic training of our employees to treat all who visit the U.S. Capitol Grounds with dignity and respect.

There has been criticism of advocacy groups for using children to prove their point, some of which can be seen here.

But the groups argue that they are giving the children an opportunity to speak for themselves about how immigration policy has impacted their lives. The children with the "Keeping Families Together" campaign spoke on Thursday with Reps. Scott Tipton (R-Colo.) and Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.), according to a press release from the Fair Immigration Reform Movement.

In that release, 11-year-old Esteban Verdugo is quoted telling his story to Tipton.

"The holidays are really hard for me since my dad was deported in June," he said, according to the Fair Immigration Reform Movement. "I'm scared that my stepdad could be next. It’s Christmas time and while most families are together, immigrant families like mine continue to be separated. We need to pass immigration reform now."

Francesca Quaranta, Transgender Police Officer In Connecticut, Files Complaint Against Supervisors

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A transgender police officer has filed a complaint with a Connecticut agency alleging her supervisors created a hostile work environment because of her gender identity.

Francesca Quaranta says her colleagues were initially supportive, but she began to face hostility from some over time and the situation became so bad she took paid leave. The 46-year-old is asking the state Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities to investigate her claims of discrimination and harassment.

Telephone messages left Thursday with Middletown officials were not immediately returned.

Quaranta, a police officer with Middletown since 2004, says a lieutenant repeatedly referred to her as "Frank" and "him" and questioned whether she was fit for duty.

She says she faced more scrutiny of her work performance and was ordered to remove her earrings even though female officers had been allowed to wear them.

Yale Lockdown: Police Obtain Images Of Caller Who Told Them Gunman Was En Route

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Police say they have images from a surveillance camera of the suspect who made a phone call saying an armed man was heading to shoot up Yale University.

Authorities also say they have identified several people of interest in their investigation following Monday night's six-hour campus lockdown. New Haven Police Chief Dean Esserman said Monday he was leaning toward the incident being a hoax.

SWAT teams searching the Ivy League campus didn't find a gunman after a room-by-room search. No one was injured.

A 911 call was received at 9:48 a.m. Monday from a man at a pay phone about a mile from the campus who said his roommate was on the way to the university to shoot people.

Classes aren't in session this week.

Lawyer For Woman Shot By Police At U.S. Capitol Says Officers Should Be Criminally Prosecuted

AppId is over the quota

WASHINGTON (AP) — A lawyer for a Connecticut woman killed by police after a car chase outside the U.S. Capitol is requesting a Justice Department investigation.

Attorney Eric Sanders says in a letter that he believes the officers who shot Miriam Carey last month mishandled the encounter and should be criminally prosecuted.

Police have said Carey tried to ram her car into a White House barrier on Oct. 3 and then led police on a car chase that ended with her being killed near the Capitol.

Records released after the shooting show Carey had previously told police that government cameras kept her under constant surveillance and that President Barack Obama communicated with her.

The District of Columbia police department is investigating the use of deadly force, which is standard protocol for police-involved shootings.

Bomb Scare At Oklahoma Police Station Turns Out To Be A Burrito

AppId is over the quota

That salsa must have some punch.

An Oklahoma police station had a minor bomb scare this week after a man turned in a "suspicious package." It turned out to be a burrito.

The Oklahoma City resident found a thermos container in his backyard around 1 p.m. Thursday, local news outlet KFOR reports. There was foil sticking out of the top, and the man was unsure of what was inside, so he decided to drive it over to a local police station to be safe.

After he relayed the story to police, officers instructed him to leave the package outside as a precaution. A police bomb squad X-rayed the item but soon discovered that the container did not contain an explosive device -- just a delicious snack.

It's not immediately clear how the burrito came to be on the resident's lawn, or why it was in a thermos, but Oklahoma City police are none too thrilled that the man brought it into the station.

“If you think it might or could be dangerous, you should not touch or move it,” Capt. Dexter Nelson told The Oklahoman. “Call the authorities and we will investigate it there.”

Surprisingly, this is not the first time a burrito has been involved in a bomb scare. Earlier this year, a New Mexico man was arrested after he called the FBI's Public Access number and made a threat involving an explosive burrito.
