Lawyer For Woman Shot By Police At U.S. Capitol Says Officers Should Be Criminally Prosecuted

AppId is over the quota

WASHINGTON (AP) — A lawyer for a Connecticut woman killed by police after a car chase outside the U.S. Capitol is requesting a Justice Department investigation.

Attorney Eric Sanders says in a letter that he believes the officers who shot Miriam Carey last month mishandled the encounter and should be criminally prosecuted.

Police have said Carey tried to ram her car into a White House barrier on Oct. 3 and then led police on a car chase that ended with her being killed near the Capitol.

Records released after the shooting show Carey had previously told police that government cameras kept her under constant surveillance and that President Barack Obama communicated with her.

The District of Columbia police department is investigating the use of deadly force, which is standard protocol for police-involved shootings.

Eyeball Jewelry: Woman Has Platinum Heart Implanted In Her Eye, But AAO Says It's A Bad Idea

AppId is over the quota

A New York City woman had a platinum heart implanted in her eyeball as a "conversation maker," according to news reports.

The woman, Lucy Luckayanko, told Fox 5 News that "I will be able to tell people. It will be unique. It will be sort of my unique factor." Luckayanko is reportedly the first woman in New York City to undergo the procedure, though it's been done in Europe and in Los Angeles before.

The doctor who performed the procedure on her, Park Avenue Laser Vision medical director Dr. Emil Chynn, told Fox 5 that the procedure is done by opening up the eyes with a speculum, and then making an incision with scissors between the white of the eye (called the sclera) and the clear part of the eye (called the conjunctiva). Then, the jewelry is placed within the superficial conjunctiva membrane.

However, the American Academy of Opthlamology warned that the procedure could be risky, potentially leading to infection or bleeding that could cause blinding, as well as perforation or puncture of the eye, or conjunctivitis. It's also possible for bleeding to occur beneath the conjunctiva, causing hemorrhage.

"The American Academy of Ophthalmology has not identified sufficient evidence to support the safety or therapeutic value of this procedure," Dr. Philip R. Rizzuto, M.D., an ophthalmologist and Communications Secretary for the Academy, said in a statement. "It urges consumers to avoid placing in the eye any foreign body or material that is not proven to be medically safe or approved by the FDA."

Bill Clinton: 'I Hope We Have A Woman President In My Lifetime'

Former President Bill Clinton said he hopes to see a woman president in his lifetime.

"I think it would be a good thing for the world as well as for America," Clinton said at an event in Beijing on Monday.

Many are pushing former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to run in 2016, including Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who has already endorsed Clinton for president. Clinton hasn't announced any plans to run for office, but has said she is both "pragmatic and realistic" about aiming for the nation's top office.

During his appearance in China, the former president wouldn't comment on his wife's 2016 plans.

"I do not know if she's going to run, and there is no such thing as a sure thing in politics," Clinton said.

Clinton has shied away from commenting on his wife's political career in the past, saying it's "best not to discuss that issue." On Monday, Clinton said he'd support his wife no matter what she decides to do in 2016.

"If [running for president is] what she wants to do, I will support her," Clinton said in Beijing. "But if she decides for whatever reason she doesn't, I will support that."

EFE
